Cold emailing can change the course of your business if you know the ways around it. It is a magic tool if used properly. You might have heard things like “Cold emails are nothing but spam and no one replies to them.” or something along the lines of “sending a cold email will make your prospect not want to get your service as it’s irritating to receive such emails.”

Well, in this article I will tell you how these statements can be proved wrong if you send your cold emails properly. Follow the guide and you will receive a reply!

What is Cold Emailing?

Before giving you a guide I think it would be right to start by explaining what cold emailing is.

Cold emailing is an attempt to start a conversation between two parties where the cold emailer wants to engage in business with the other party. Now it can be said that cold emails are the online version of “breaking ice.”

Cold emails are pretty much like darts thrown in the dark. Sometimes it’ll hit the target, sometimes it won’t. I can assure you that if you don’t cold email in an appropriate manner, your dart may never hit.

My Guiding Tips To You

Here are my tips to help you not annoy your prospect and instead make them your client!

  1. Personalize your cold email

If you use a copy-pasted text as your cold email, I feel bad for you and your prospect. Believe it or not, your prospect can easily see if what you’re sending is a copy-pasted text or if it is a personalized message.

Not only this, when you personalize your cold emails it shows your prospect that you care about them.

Do not just look into their LinkedIn profile or website and start writing, do deep research. Develop a theory of mind about them. Get to know what their interests are, what their vision and mission is.

Explain to them how you fit into their theory of mind.

2. Give them a reason to respond

Why should your prospect spend their precious time engaging in a conversation with you? This is a question that you need to answer in your cold email. Identify their needs or their problems and tell them how you can solve it for them.

People will always be encouraged to reply if they think that their problem can be solved or some need can be met by you. Remember, you’re the one asking them for a favour, you need to give something 2x better than the favour you’re asking.

3. Keep it short and easy

No-one likes to read long emails. There is a high chance that if they see a long email they would not even bother reading it.

Always try to keep your email as short and crisp as possible. It is also important to make your email easy for your prospect. Be clear with what you want, what you can give and everything else. Try to make the whole experience for your client as easy as possible.

For example, “let me know if you want to get on a Zoom call” is not a good thing to say. This shows that you’re indecisive. Also, you are putting your client in a position where they need to think and make the decision for you. You’re making the experience difficult for them.

Instead, just say “I would love to get on a Zoom call on (date) at (time).”

4. Be humble and slightly vulnerable

Your cold email should show that you’re confident but not give an image that you’re arrogant. Be humble in your cold emails. Try to use more appreciative words.

Now, this does not mean that you need to be the dog and treat your prospect like a master. You’re requesting a favour from someone you don’t know. You will give them the impression that they are a good person if they want to support by showing appreciation and vulnerability. Since you’re approaching them, you also give them a rush of power and status.

Don’t just say “thanks” instead try saying “Thank You for your time. Hoping to hear from you soon!” It is also good to tell them that if they are too busy or do not need your services, that is okay.

There is no short-cut to success. If you want to succeed in cold emailing and getting good clients through it, you need to put in the effort. Believe me, putting effort is worth it. People’s lives have changed through cold-emailing and now you can do it too!

Happy cold-emailing!
